Miltanmai/Items of The Tamil Diaspora

2025

Documentary Film, Archival Website, Publication

Undergrad thesis project

Miltanmai is an undergraduate thesis project created over the span of two semesters. Through documentary and publication it explores the story of one Eelam Tamil family in Canada after escaping the Tamil genocide in Sri Lanka.

Thesis Process Book
Both the process book and interview publication were printed on newsprint. Tamil newspapers in Canada are an important source for the Tamil community, from finding businesses that serve Tamil needs to getting news about what is going on back home.

Items of The Tamil Diaspora is an archival website that was created in 2022, but revamped in 2025. The website serves as an archive of typical items found in Tamil homes in Canada. These items represent the resistance and resilience of Tamil culture despite it’s people facing a genocide in their home country.

Exhibition Flyer
This flyer contains scans of Sri Lankan ID cards and a Canadian passport. The importance of these physical documents and the deeper meanings they hold is a recurring theme throughout the documentary.

Interview Publication
This publication is inspired by Tamil newspapers. These colours and shapes often appear in Tamil newspapers, a design that become iconic in the Tamil community.
